If you are bothered or embarrassed by the appearance of a fuller chin profile, you’re not alone. More than 80% of people with a double chin (or “submental fullness”) are concerned about the condition, and it can have a significant effect on a person’s self-perception.
Previously it would have been necessary to undergo liposuction in order to reduce a double chin – an invasive surgical procedure requiring a few days’ recovery time. However, a new innovation in aesthetic medicine is now available in Australia, offering a non-surgical alternative for those who wish to reduce their double chin without incisions, stitches, scars or downtime.
Double chin reduction is an aesthetic procedure that utilises a safe injectable treatment to reduce the double chin and redefine the jawline. The results are permanent as the destroyed fat cells are not able to reaccumulate or rejuvenate.
While liposuction is a surgical procedure requiring incision and sutures, double chin reduction is more suitable for those who wish to treat the double chin subtly and non-invasively. The treatment destroys the fat cells in the double chin area, as opposed to liposuction in which the fat is actually aspirated out and removed.
During the procedure, a grid is placed over the chin area to map out the specific locations for the injections to be administered accurately. The patient receives these injections – anywhere between 15-50, depending on their anatomy and concerns – into the double-chin area where excess fat forms
Typically, a double chin reduction procedure at EST Clinic will be between 30-45 minutes long. Most patients can expect to see a visible reduction to their double chin after two sessions, however several treatments (up to 6 for a prominent double chin) may be required depending on the patient’s treatment goals.
Although the results of the treatment are permanent, excessive weight gain may still reverse results after the treatment.
As with any cosmetic injectable procedure it is normal for patients to experience some discomfort and a slight bruising sensation following the treatments. Some swelling and tenderness will persist for a few days afterwards; still, recovery time will be faster than recovery from liposuction because it is not an invasive procedure.
Professionals administering the injection are advised to recognise when a patient appears to have excessive skin in the chin area, which may not result in an aesthetically desirable outcome. While the product is able to effectively remove fat from the chin area, it does not remove excess skin. Liposuction along with a surgical neck contouring procedure may be more appropriate.
It is important for the patient to ensure that their treatment is performed by a medical professional with the proper experience and expertise. At EST Clinic, Dr Frank Lin will discuss the side effects and possible risks involved with the procedure in your initial consultation.
