Many people are self-conscious about their jawlines. A wide jawline can create the appearance of a square face shape, while many desire a heart – or “V”-shaped face. While jaw reduction surgery is available to address this concern, face slimming is an effective, non-invasive and less expensive option for patients who want to avoid a surgical treatment.
Face slimming, experiencing increasing popularity in Australia, creates a “softer” angle and more contoured appearance to the face.
The appearance of a bulky, square jaw can be caused by well-developed masseter (“chewing”) muscles, which may have been built up due to excessive teeth grinding. In a face slimming treatment, a more defined jawline is achieved by weakening these muscles with muscle relaxing injections, significantly reducing their volume and narrowing the lower face.
Facial slimming can commonly treat a square-shaped, wide or “heavy” jaw and reduce bruxism (teeth grinding). It can result in the appearance of weight loss as the cheeks will appear slimmer. Results of this treatment will be subtle yet noticeable, and it is important to be realistic about what to expect.
Anti-wrinkle products – such as Botox and Dysport – are muscle relaxants. When injected into the jaw, the anti-wrinkle substance blocks nerve impulses to the masseter muscles. This results in a controlled weakening and relaxation of the jaw, subtly softening the jawline.
The effects of the treatment can last between 3-4 months. After this you will need to undergo subsequent treatments in order to maintain results, as the muscle relaxant will wear off and the masseters will strengthen again. However, effects will begin to last longer once several treatments have taken place, which means that follow-up sessions may only be required every 6 months. As every patient is unique, some may require more or less maintenance than others.
The face slimming treatment is quick and considered to be relatively comfortable. The visit will last less than an hour, there is no downtime required and patients can return home or to work immediately after the procedure. Most patients report very little discomfort, however ice and, on rare occasions, numbing cream can be used to minimise discomfort if necessary.
Anti-wrinkle product is administered via a thin needle directly into the lower jaw. The product is measured in units, and the volume of units required depends on the size of your masseter muscles.
It is common to experience minor side effects such as swelling, redness and slight bruising immediately following the treatment, however these usually disappear within a few days. It is recommended that you avoid touching your lower face for at least 12 hours after receiving the treatment. Serious risks or complications caused by the procedure, such as infection numbness and drooping, are extremely uncommon.
You will begin to notice a change after a few days, and the full jawline slimming effect will be noticeable within 10 days. Other facial muscles will continue to function as normal, and your facial expressions will not be affected by the treatment.
