What is it?

IPL has been used commercially since the mid 90’s for hair removal. How does it work?

Light energy emitted by ICON device is selectively absorbed by the melanin of the hair shaft and the hair matrix. The energy is delivered in a way that only affects the hair follicle but not the surrounding tissue. Then, the light energy is converted to heat energy. The short pulse delivery of ICON system will damage the hair bulb, causing thinning and lightening of hair as well as delay in hair growth.

According to extended theory of selective photothermolysis, the light energy that delivered over a longer period of time will cause more thermal diffusion and has certain effect to the stem cell. Although the stem cells do not have melanin to absorb light but it can be destroyed by the heat diffusion from the hair shaft and matrix cell.
